Continuing Education Rules & Regulations for New Mexico Private Investigators
If you're a licensed private investigator in New Mexico, you must meet specific continuing education requirements to renew your license. Here's an overview of the rules and guidelines mandated by the NM Regulation and Licensing Department, Private Investigations Advisory Board, under 16.48.6 NMAC (CE) and 16.48.7 NMAC (renewal terms). Continuing Education Requirements
- Private investigators in New Mexico must complete 6 hours of approved continuing education per renewal period, with a minimum of 2 hours each year.
- Renewal periods run 3 years (terms began January 1, 2024).
- No online cap is specified by the state.
- Extra CE hours cannot be carried over to the next renewal period.
Types of Courses
- College Courses: Accredited college coursework counts at 15 CE hours per credit.
- In-House Training: Training provided in-house by a licensed patrol company is acceptable.
- Approved Institutions: Courses from the NM Law Enforcement Academy and other department-approved institutions are acceptable.
Steps to Receive Continuing Education Credit
- Complete 6 hours of approved continuing education (at least 2 hours each year).
- Obtain proof of completion for each course.
- Submit your proof with the renewal application; without it the license will not renew.
Important Notes
- Firearms requalification does not count toward continuing education.
