Continuing Education Rules & Regulations for Iowa Private Investigators
If you hold an Iowa PI agency license or employee ID card, you must meet specific continuing education requirements to renew. Here's an overview of the rules and guidelines mandated by the Iowa Department of Public Safety under Iowa Admin. Code 661—121.22 (Iowa Code Ch. 80A). You can verify a license through the Department of Public Safety. You can verify active licenses through the IA License Search.
Continuing Education Requirements
- 12 hours of continuing education are required per two-year cycle for agency licensees and employee ID-card holders.
- No more than 50% (a maximum of 6 of the 12 hours) may be earned through correspondence or self-study.
- Extra CE hours cannot be carried over to the next cycle.
Steps to Receive Continuing Education Credit
- Complete approved continuing education, keeping self-study to no more than half of the total.
- Obtain a signed course statement / certificate for each course.
- Submit Form PD3 along with FBI fingerprint cards (FD-258) at least 30 days before expiration.
- Retain your proof of completion for three years.
Important Notes
- CE attaches to the agency license and employee ID-card holders, not a standalone individual PI license.
- An out-of-state PI with comparable home-state CE may be exempt under 661—121.22(2)"a".
